4 Things You Need to Know About Car Insurance

Martin Severe

1) Some of the most useful coverages are the cheapest

The coverage you are required by law to buy is liability insurance. It is usually the most expensive. It should be. The most common coverage limits could mean that your insurance carrier is on the hook for thousands of dollars for any harm you do.

Although, most other coverages are capped by the value of your car.

While a crash or collision, which pays to repair your car even if you are at fault, can be expensive, other optional coverages like roadside assistance, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and comprehensive coverage can provide a lot of security at a slightly higher price.

2) Factors that affect car insurance rate

Auto insurance companies use different criteria when they evaluate an insurance application during a process called underwriting. Every car insurance company has guidelines regarding which types of drivers they want to accept and how much they will charge the drivers that they consider a bigger risk. The guidelines are different for each company.

During the underwriting process, car insurance applicants are placed in groups based on how much money and how many claims the insurance company believes it might have to pay. Underwriting is done automatically by software. The insurance company will look at vehicle records to see how many accidents or tickets a driver has received.

3) Insurance prices differ (a lot) by company

Car insurance rates vary and each insurance company decides its own prices. That's because every insurance company uses its own formula to assess risk and decide what you pay. This would mean that no two insurers will have the same price for the same policy. So, if you don't compare prices, you may end up overpaying.

4) Higher deductibles can lower your premium

Insurance prices are based on how much money the insurance company thinks it could have to pay. If you agree to pay for a bigger portion of your damages by increasing your deductibles, your car insurance company will know they won't have to pay as much for your claims. Due to this, they will give you a lower premium. If you choose to raise your deductibles to save money, ensure you can afford to pay the deductible if you have to make a claim.
